Summer Reading List & Assignments

 

Please note: Those grades which have been updated for the summer are marked. Please check this page in mid-June to be sure you have the complete list!

Each student is expected to come to school in September having already read the books for their grade level (the grade they will be in). Click on any of the linked books to buy them online! You can also look here for other books of interest.

(Updated 6/1/05) Incoming Kindergartners suggested reading:

(Updated 6/1/05) Incoming First-Graders should try to choose some of these suggestions, as well as other books of interest. Any good books at your child's level are fine.

Children should read a minimum of 15 minutes per day.

A list of all books read over the summer, including title and author, must also be turned in on the first day of school.

Parents: The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelese is a highly recommended resource!

(Updated 6/1/05)Incoming Second-Graders should read a MINIMUM of 60 minutes per week. Any good books that are at your child's reading level are fine. Here are some suggestions.

 

(Updated 6-7-04)  Incoming Third-Graders should read:

Beverly Cleary Book - students may choose any book by the author Beverly Cleary.  The reading levels of these books range from high 2nd grade to mid 5th grade level.  The main characters include boys, girls, friends, pets, and even animals.  The students may choose a book that both interests them and challenge their abilities.

Writing Assignments - After completing your reading choice, students must write a BRIEF 1 page summary explaining the book including the following:

*Title

*Author

*Opinion of book

*Explain favorite parts

*Recommendation of book to others

Incoming third-graders must read at least 10 minutes a day this summer, either out loud or silently.

On the first day of school, please bring your summary, a list of all the books you have read this summer, your math packet, and your art supplies.

 

(Updated 5/1/05) Incoming Fourth-Graders must read:

  • Fudge-A-Mania by Judy Blume
  • Lost on a Mountain in Maine by Donn Fendler

Please read both books. Choose one book that you will do one of the following projects on. Please bring your projects with you on the first day of school.

 

Incoming Fifth-Graders:

You will need to read three books this summer.  Please read There is a Boy in the Girls Bathroom by Lois Sachar.  You will be quizzed on the first week of school on this novel.

Please two books of your choice and write a book review for each free choice.  Parents please sign reviews.  Reviews are due on the first day of school.

Incoming Sixth Grade Summer Reading

Please choose two books from the Jr. High Master Book List and write a book review on each book you read.

There is also one required book: The Black Pearl by Scott O’Dell. Testing and discussion will take place during the first few days of school.

Please make sure you bring your completed math packet with you as well.

Have a great summer; I am looking forward to seeing all of you in late August.

 

 

(Updated 6/1/05) Incoming Seventh-Graders

MANDATORY READING - You are required to read three books this summer.  Two are mandatory and one is a free choice.

            Required book #1.  Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor

            Required book #2.  A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle

      **These two books can be found at any public library.  The third book may come from the junior high reading list or another book by one of the authors on the list.

When you return in September, you will be tested on the two required books.  For the third book, you will write a traditional book report.  Title, author, setting, and description of charactors.  After writing a short summary and an opinion of the book, you will "cast" the book as if it was being made into a movie.  BE CREATIVE

 

(Updated6/1/05) Incoming Eighth-Graders are expected to read a minimum of 6 books this summer. Four must be from the Jr. High Master Book List. Two can be any book you choose. You will receive an extra credit 'A' for each appropriate additional book you read.

For each book, you are to have a short report that includes all of the following:

1. Name of book, author, number of pages.
2. One paragraph about the main character, including physical description, characteristics (with examples), and the character's role in the book.
3. One paragraph about why you liked/disliked the book (with good reasons).
4. Your signature AND a parent's signature.

Each short report is to be on a separate piece of paper, with all five reports stapled together.

*You will receive an extra credit "A" for each appropriate additional book you read and write a report for.
