Oops.

You meant to do it. You thought about doing it. You even had ideas for what you were going to write. The problem is, you didn't write that paper for Mrs. Haverty, and you just realized that it's due tomorrow. Oops.

Well, the answer is easy: you'll just go on the internet and copy and paste a little information. Rearrange a few sentences and add some of your own words. Type your name at the top, print it out, and it's done. You're all set. Right?

Wrong.

You have been hearning about plagiarism since you were old enough to write your name. You know that it's wrong and can get you in a lot of touble. It's always been that way. But now, it's harder than ever to avoid it. When Miss G. was your age (that's only about 10 years ago!) plagiarism was almost not worth it. It could take hours of hand-cramping writing to copy something out of a book, and then even more work to rearrange things so it looked more like your own writing.

Nowadays, it's really easy. Copy and paste. That's all you have to do, and your paper is done. You can rearrange a few things and you'll never get caught.

Wrong again.

In this WebQuest, you will learn what plagiarism is and practice citing internet sources in a paper. You will also look at some real cases in which people plagiarized or infringed copyright -- and got caught. Then, it will be up to you to decide how you will maintain your own Academic Integrity.
